Mass Save Heat Pump Rebate Calculator
Mass Save rebate = $2,650 per ton for a whole-home heat pump installed in 2026, up to $8,500: a 36,000 BTU/h (3-ton) system gets $7,950. A home not weatherized enough gets the partial-home rate instead: $1,125 per ton, so $3,375 for the same 3 tons.

Worked examples
A 3-ton whole-home heat pump replacing oil, installed in 2026
- 36,000 ÷ 12,000 = 3 tons
- 3 × $2,650 = $7,950, under the $8,500 cap
- $22,000 − $7,950 = $14,050 left to pay
Result: $7,950 estimated rebate, $14,050 net cost.
Checked by the automated test “mass save — 2026, oil, whole home weatherized, 36,000 BTU/h, $22,000 → 3 tons, $7,950, net $14,050”.
The same project installed in 2027
- 3 × $2,350 = $7,050, under the $7,500 cap
- $7,950 − $7,050 = $900
Result: $7,050: $900 less than in 2026.
Checked by the automated test “mass save — same project installed in 2027 → $7,050, $900 less”.
How it works
Tons = AHRI cooling capacity (BTU/h) ÷ 12,000, all outdoor units added
Whole home: tons × $2,650, up to $8,500 (2026); tons × $2,350, up to $7,500 (2027)
Partial home: tons × $1,125, up to $8,500, + $500 weatherization bonus + $500 sizing bonus, total up to $8,500 (2026); tons × $1,000, up to $7,500 (2027)
Basic: tons × $250, up to $2,500 (2026)
Rebate = the lower of that amount and the total installed cost
Assumptions
- Whole-home rates need a home weatherized enough: built in 2000 or later, an energy assessment with under $1,000 of recommended work, or the recommended work done. Otherwise partial-home rates are shown.
- Enhanced (up to $16,000) and Income Eligible (up to 100 % of the cost) are not open to homes heated with natural gas now.
- 2027 basic, bonus, Enhanced and Income Eligible amounts are not published yet: the calculator shows no figure for them.
- Tons are not rounded; dollar amounts are rounded to the dollar. Mass Save decides eligibility.
Reference table
| Size | Whole home 2026 | Whole home 2027 | Partial home 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 tons (18,000 BTU/h) | $3,975 | $3,525 | $1,688 |
| 2 tons (24,000 BTU/h) | $5,300 | $4,700 | $2,250 |
| 3 tons (36,000 BTU/h) | $7,950 | $7,050 | $3,375 |
| 4 tons (48,000 BTU/h) | $8,500 | $7,500 | $4,500 |
| 5 tons (60,000 BTU/h) | $8,500 | $7,500 | $5,625 |
Partial home before the 2026 bonuses ($500 each); in 2027 it is $1,000 per ton, up to $7,500. Every amount is capped at the installed cost.
Before you sign
- Installer and model. The installer must belong to the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network and the heat pump must be on the Qualified Product List. Ask for the AHRI reference number and cooling capacity of each system: the rebate form asks for both.
- Inspection. Projects are picked at random for an inspection before payment, and refusing it can cost you the rebate.
- Electric bill. The form warns that unless you heat with electric resistance now, a heat pump adds to your electricity use, often offset by a lower oil or propane bill.
Federal tax credit
The federal energy efficient home improvement credit (25C) does not cover a heat pump installed in 2026. IRS fact sheet FS-2025-05: “The credit will not be allowed for any property placed in service after December 31, 2025.”
Common mistakes
- Counting heating BTUs instead of AHRI cooling capacity Cape Light Compact: “Tons are calculated based on AHRI cooling capacity divided by 12,000 BTUs.” Typing a 42,000 BTU/h heating rating for a 36,000 BTU/h system would show $8,500 instead of $7,950.
- Asking for whole-home rates without weatherization proof The 2026 form accepts three proofs: the home was built in 2000 or later, a Home Energy Assessment found less than $1,000 of weatherization to do, or the work recommended since 2013 is done. Without one, the same 3 tons get $3,375, not $7,950.
- Expecting an income-based offer with gas heat Mass Save's 2026 summary: “Customers with pre-existing natural gas heating systems are not eligible for income qualified rebates.” A 4-ton system replacing gas heat stays at the standard $8,500, not up to $16,000.
- Installing in January 2027 on 2026 rates The 2026 rates cover equipment installed between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Installed in 2027, the same 3 tons get $7,050, $900 less, and the 2027 bonuses are not published yet.
- Missing the February 28, 2027 deadline For a 2026 installation, the form and documents must be received by February 28, 2027: signed form, installer invoice with model numbers, install date and total cost, proof of payment, the Manual J report for the sizing bonus and the whole-home verification form.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the Mass Save heat pump rebate in 2026?
For an air source heat pump installed in 2026: $2,650 per ton up to $8,500 for whole-home heating; $1,125 per ton up to $8,500 for partial-home heating, plus a $500 weatherization bonus and a $500 sizing bonus; $250 per ton up to $2,500 for the basic rebate. Mass Save lists $2,350 per ton, up to $7,500, for whole-home installs from 2027.
Does Mass Save give a rebate on mini splits?
Mini splits fall under the same air source heat pump rates: Cape Light Compact describes air source heat pumps as “commonly referred to as mini-splits or central ducted heat pumps”. The model must be on the Mass Save Heat Pump Qualified Product List. Add the AHRI cooling capacity of every outdoor unit: two 18,000 BTU/h units make 3 tons, $7,950 whole-home in 2026.
Who is income eligible for Mass Save?
It depends on household size and yearly income, in Mass Save's 2026-2027 table: for 4 people, up to $103,049 is Income Eligible (up to 100 % of the install cost) and $103,050 to $137,399 is Enhanced (up to $16,000). Homes heated with natural gas now are not eligible for either. Choose “Check with my household income” in the calculator.
Where is the Mass Save heat pump rebate form?
After installation, apply online at MassSave.com/Savings or mail the 2026 Air Source Heat Pump Rebate form (MASG-0078) with your invoice and proof of payment, to be received by February 28, 2027. Enhanced customers use the form at MassSave.com/EnhancedHPRebate. The form says to allow 6–8 weeks for payment once approved; for the status, call 888-855-0340.
Can I use a Mass Save HEAT Loan with the rebate?
Yes: the 2026 form says the rebate “may not be combined with any other utility or energy efficiency service provider offer for the same equipment, with the exception of the HEAT Loan financing.” The HEAT Loan is 0 % financing, to apply for before installing the equipment. It spreads the cost; the calculator does not include it.
